Chicken Mistake #5 and #6

Nothing major, just simple things.
#5, I figured if I gave the chickens enough room (A big yard) they would not do any damage to the grass.
Wrong.
They concentrate on on area until they are “done” with it.

That means, they might have a half acre to roam, but they like 5 square feet that no longer has grass.

I don’t mind, I was just surprised they did not roam more.

#6 Umm, duh. Eggs are warm when they are fresh! OK, this would be obvious if I gave 500 milliseconds of thought to it before I picked up my gift from one of the girls this morning.

But I didn’t.

I let the chickens out, saw an egg in their little makeshift nest, and picked it up.. it must have been laid in the previous 5 minutes, because it was warm..
First thought was.. Ok, to this urban store egg buying guy, fresh eggs are supposed to be cold!.
Wrong!

Too funny. Chickens; everyone should have a couple!

Ours have been laying for a couple months. We just have a heated base under the water fount, no heat lamp, and they are tolerating the cold just fine. (What little cold we’ve had anyway.)We have 9 hens and we end up with 6-9 eggs a day. They have an attached run that’s about 8×10, and we try to let them out for a few hours a day. They wander all over the yard, into the field, and have a favorite dirt pile around the side of the house. The kids love them, and someone is always running out to check for eggs.
