Here are a couple of poems/rhymes that Melinda wrote recently. She is a stealth academic.. She is a star student, but she works under the radar.. I need to acknowledge her more.
Melinda received ALL A’s.. keeping her record of never getting anything but.
And, Hannah proudly got ALL A’s also.. breaking her all A’s and a B or two streak that has been plaguing her for two years. She is quite happy about that.
Rockwell got A’s B’s, and two C’s (two 84’s, and 85 is a B -doh)
He is going to be in trouble if he does not bring that up and quick.
Hannah traveled on a band trip to Charleston yesterday. It appears they had a really good time. The bus broke down on the way home, but they made the best of it, and no seemed upset.
Melinda is working on a project for school, they have to do a weather report. What good would it be if a girl could not use her dads resources?? So, I took her to work and had her record a little forecast:
She had fun…
Rockwell has been taking stuff apart lately, to which his dad is very happy about.. I have been bringing old electronics home, and he has been taking them apart, piece by piece. He will have mastered that screwdriver in no time. Keep it up Rockwell.
Arrg. Whats with the inability to post? I guess I just want to put more stuff on than I do, so I procrastinate.
Well, this post is just so I don’t forget some things.
Hannah went to “Winter Jam” with a group of friends. She really had a good time, and even got a couple CD’s.
Melinda and I attended a Daddy-Daughter Dance at School, and I really need to talk about how important Beyblades are to Rockwell at this point in his life. I swear, he lives and Breathes beyblades.
We also got the scooter running at full speed.. Although its sorta hard to ride… the kids can’t take off without doing a wheelie…
you can see it on youtube..: Rockwell trying to ride it and Melinda trying to ride it
Oh! also, The Kids and I went to the “Aiken Trials” its a horse event that is sorta fancy.. and we went with VIP tickets, so we got to go into the hospitality tent and eat, drink, and have sweets to our hearts content.
At one point I said to Melinda, “Miss Manners would not approve of you putting your elbow on the table” to which Hannah quickly replied “Miss Manners would not have let us in here!” Oh man.. to funny.. and true. we were a bit out of place.
<parental boasting>She was invited to take the SAT because of some scores she received on some standardised testing she did in school in the fall.
She took it in January, and we just got the score back: 1360. (out of 2400) Not bad. Actually, its close to an average score (40th percentile) for a “college bound high school senior”. (~970 out of 1600 for those of you that took it before 2006) Pretty good for a 7th grader. Way to go Hannah! That’s my girl.
And, I dont want to forget Melinda. She has been kicking butt and taking names too. She said to me “Dad, I got 100’s in all my classes except one on the midterm report.” As she waits for me to ask her about the one that she didnt get 100 on.. “Oh, that one.. I got 102!”
She takes a test on monday to see if she can get into the GT program. I sure hope she makes it.. She wanted to match her big sister so bad..
Smart aleck.
And Rockwell? He is doing fine. He would do great if he did his classwork! However, it appears he is all of a sudden truely interested in reading. He would read before, but it was not a priority. Now, it seems like it is.. I pray it is! Reading is VERY IMPORTANT.
This is the first time in 6 year I missed a month posting. January 2011 does not exist! Actually, a lot happened. We went to the Zoo in Columbia, Hannah took the ACT test, Hannah also went to space camp in Alabama, and Melinda went to The Ruth Patric Science center and learned about owls and simple electrical circuits. Not to mention Rockwells obsession with beyblades.
SO, without further adeu, here are some pictures of these events.
This Friday, we went to the Ruth Patric Science center. It was fun.. here are the girls on the bus on the way there.
First we had some demonstrations about owls. Did you know they cant move their eyes? that is why their heads move so much.
The girls got to dissect a “owl pellet”. I learned something here too.. I did not know they coughed up the pellet the day after they ate the animal. I thought it was “poo”.
They matched up the bones they found in a pellet to a chart. Their owl had eaten a rodent! actually two!
The girls Learned about parallel and series electrical circuits. I could see the understanding in their eyes. it was great. Here they are demonstrating their optional project.. they could do whatever they wanted to.. and they made a huge series circuit with 2 light bulbs, two motorized propellers and 6 batteries!
Here are Melinda’s notes of the day. She is very organized…
Earlier in January, we went to the Zoo..
Had to get one of all of them together doncha know.
How many times in your life will you be able to feed a giraffe out of our hand? I think this is so cool.
This has to be the worst picture I have ever taken.
These birds were crazy.
Not to mention all over the place.
Here is Hannah with some of her friends on the Space camp trip. They spent 2 days in Alabama and had a great time.
Well, At least I can show you Melinda’s awards. Melinda really shined in school this year. She received ALL A’s..
She was also the student of the year in her classroom, I beleive it was for being the organizer of all the classroom plays they did. Each friday they would put on a play. I am sure 3rd grade is going to be a memorable experience for her, simoply for that reason alone.
And, I have another reader on my hands. perhaps not as enthusiastic as Hannah, but she is definitely into it! Which makes me happy. 🙂
I will collect the other kids awards and show them next.
Hannah was invited to read a story she wrote in front of a group of students (and their parents) Last night. In my 0pinion, she had the best reading.. but I might be biased. 🙂 Although, she was one of two students to really use expression in her voice.. the others where monotone for the most part.
These last few days have been ridiculous. Thursday I had to bring the cotton candy machine to school and help some PTO people start making 700 (!) cotton candies as a treat for Science and math day, I had a bunch of stuff to do at work, and a SmartKids.sc Board meeting. Friday I had more stuff at work, And a science and math day presentation (I presented a demonstration on electricity to the third graders. A couple of them said it was their favorite of the day.. yay). And this morning? OMgoodness, A hot sunburnt day doing cotton candy (again) for the carnival. Put a fork in me, I’m done. So is Kathi.. she went out and collected a mother-load of donations from small businesses around town. She probably raised a good 400$ or more for the teachers. Go here for a whole Album of pictures from the carnival

Hannah had a “solo ensemble” at Aiken High School, where she had to play her Bassoon in front of judges. She got a perfect grade in the solo, and one point off a perfect grade in the Duet. In other words, she is doing well for her first year in the instrument.
Hannah made me happy this afternoon. She was looking through some letters, and the button collection, and said, “I think I want to be a genealogist for plan C.” I said, what are plan A and B? And she said Plan A is a heart surgeon, and plan B is an editor.
I like the sound of all of her plans. I’m glad she is interested in Genealogy!
And on a parting Note, Both of our Girls were mentioned in the paper: Melinda for A Average grades, and Hannah for A-B average grades. Ironically, Hannah has had her computer time reduced as a punishment, because the only reason she got any B’s was not doing/handing in her homework. Her test scores were exceptional otherwise.
I’m still a Proud Parent all the same. </parental boasting mode>
