Beta Club

“Beta Club? Why you no make it into Alpha club?”

Well, it was funny to me at least.

Hannah was asked to join the Beta Club as school. I’m not exactly sure what the qualifications are, but I am pretty sure the teachers have to recommend you. It’s good to be recognized, isnt it?? Congratulations H! Keep up the good work. I know you have been giving school work some effort, and it really shows. I have told her before so she knows; often the effort is worth more than the raw intellectual power… Put both together and watch out!

More interesting Hannah homework

OK.. This is supposed to be loosely based off of the play “Antigone” (by sophocles.)
I like a couple things she did here.. the Latin.. (“Unicornium humilitatum et iris mannis breui dabitur mori dolore.” = “Unicorns and rainbow ponies shall soon die of grief.”), “that escalated quickly” a funny saying we say to each other too often. The poetic verse when the sheriff talks to “Mit”. The flying pigs. I also like that she gives her homework to me to email to her teacher… It lets me read it!

anyway, without further adieu: givertaker

Oh, and congrats to Obama in winning a second term.

Melinda not feeling well.

She might have Dengue fever… I guess its semi common down there. A couple of the teachers and students have it? I guess it’s caused by the “aides aegipti mosquito”, and they are out in force this time of year. It probably does not help that the school does not have glass windows.. heh. (they have louvers) The principle said they “will be supplying citronella candles and Deet spray to each classroom” We will know tomorrow if she has it. She has to go to the doctor for a blood test.

Hannah Halloween story… again.

So, I figured I would mention Hannah’s Story one more time. The newspaper took pictures of the winners after they read their stories. Here is the one that made it to the paper.

Ha! Hannah will love it.

Short article in paper can be found here

Halloween Horror Contest results

Well, another chance to brag. (BTW, It doesn’t get old, At least for me!)
Hannah won 3rd place in the “Teen Halloween Writing contest” at the local library with her story “Displeased”! It was open to 8th to 12th Graders. They had 80 entries. They are going to have a presentation at the library on Wednesday. I’ll record it or take some pictures to share here later. Here is a copy of the award itself. I have a video of her reading it that I need to upload. She does a good job reading it.

South Carolina Governors School for Science & Mathematics

Such a long name for a high school. SCGSSM.org One of 16 public boarding schools in the country. Consistently ranked #1 in SC scores of all types.

Hannah received a invitation to an informal meeting where they introduce you to some parents of alumni and alumni themselves, and you can ask them questions.

There were ~15 prospective students there, half 9th graders, and half 10th graders. The school is only for 11&12th grades, and the invitation is for both years. The kids are expected to go home one weekend a month.

Its unbelievable. The things they offer are … hard to believe.

100% of the teachers have a Masters degree

80% have a PHD

10 to 1 class size (!)

Summer internships at scientific labs.

Its just crazy.

But besides all those wonderful things… Here is what blew me away. I said there were 15 kids there right? (Kids from Aiken county schools were invited to this informal meeting)

3 of those 15 were Hannah and her small group from school. The kids she eats lunch with. It would have been 4 of 16, but Camara, their 4th friend who was invited was not able to come. (actually not allowed to come 🙁  (

Even if she does not end up qualifying, that little coincidence alone makes me hopeful for the future.

Another thing that is interesting.. I don’t know if it means anything. Hannah’s school has 420 kids in it. North Augusta HS (The school Hannah normally would have attended.. a known decent school) that has 1000 students, Did not have anyone represented at the meeting. I don’t know what that means, but it was a surprise.

Teri: I asked the administrator if Hannah went to Switzerland for 10th grade, would that be a problem, and they said no, not a problem. Her residence is still SC. Just make sure her qualifications are met.  🙂

Halloween horror writing contest

Like I mentioned before, Hannah had to write a scary story for English class.  If selected, it will be submitted to the county library for their local writing contest. Here it is for your review. She said she would have gotten more descriptive of the monsters if only she had a larger word budget. On a related note, She was selected by her Teacher to enter a state writing contest, “letters about literature” Where she has to write a letter to the author of book of her choice.. Sounds interesting! Ill let you know more about that as it progresses.

Anyway, here is her scary story . IMO, She seems to let the “strange behavior of mom” thing hang a bit. But chances are when I ask her about it, she will say.. “They didn’t let me have enough words!! I was 100+ words over as it was!! Ill get dinged for that alone!” The last paragraph is a statement isn’t it? Seems a little “human condition” ish to me.

Hannah halloween assignment.

Hannah and I were at the grocery yesterday, and she exclaims after seeing some decorations; “Oh, I have to write a Halloween story at school for a library contest soon..” and following that was a grumble of discontent. I asked her if she did not want to write it, and she said she did not look forward to it. I asked her why.
“well, they limit you to 1000 words… you know how hard it is to write a decent story with that few words?”

I could imagine.

Another paper by Hannah.

Here is a good one. This was not for English, this was for Biology. The assignment was: “write two paragraphs about the relevance of biology to society.”
Hannah came to me initially and said.. “What the heck does she want here??” And I said.. “Hmm. Good question.. well, we can start by asking ourselves what is biology?” and she replied “Bio; life, ology; study of.” And after a few seconds of contemplating that, she said “OK. I’ve got it from here.”

I love how she reworded the title of the paper.

Yes, I know there are more mistakes than the one the teacher pointed out.. I will give her some slack because she is not an English teacher. 🙂
